Azerbaijan has freed 10 Armenian soldiers captured during deadly border clashes last month.

In return, Armenia handed over maps detailing the location minefields in the Nagorno-Karabakh region, Azerbaijan’s State Security Service said on December 4, adding that Russia mediated the exchange.

Armenian, Azerbaijani Leaders To Meet In Brussels Mid-December: EU (RFE RL)

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinian and Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev will meet in Brussels next month to discuss border clashes and advancing diplomacy, the European Union said.

“Leaders have agreed to meet in Brussels to discuss the regional situation and ways of overcoming tensions for a prosperous and stable South Caucasus, which the EU supports,” a spokesman for Charles Michel, the president of the European Council, said in a statement on November 19.

A member of the opposition Popular Front Of Azerbaijan (AXCP) who has openly criticized the government of authoritarian President Ilham Aliyev for “ignoring the needs of children” in lower-income families has been sentenced to 10 years in prison on a stabbing charge he vehemently denies.

A court in Baku sentenced Aqil Humbatov on November 15 after it found him guilty of stabbing Yaman Mammadov in August.

The Karabakh Air Gate Opens: Future Prospects for Fuzuli Airport (Orkhan Baghirov, The Jamestown Foundation)

Late last month (October 26), Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and his Turkish counterpart, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, together inaugurated the Fuzuli International Airport, in Azerbaijan’s recently liberated city of Fuzuli, in Karabakh. This is the first airport built by Azerbaijan in the areas retaken as a result of last year’s Second Karabakh War (September 27–November 9, 2020); and its construction took only eight months. President Erdoğan became the first foreign head of state to land at Fuzuli International Airport (Hurriyet Daily News, October 26).
