Lebanese general: Special forces must overcome significant challenges (Fadi Makhoul, Defense News)

The Lebanese armed forces are assigned defensive, security and developmental tasks under the Lebanese National Defense Law. Therefore, they must (1) defend the Lebanese territories against every form of aggression, (2) maintain internal security, and (3) assist in social and developmental fields. However, due to many reasons that cannot be mentioned in this article, the Lebanese Army focused its efforts on accomplishing the second and third missions. So far, it has succeeded in combatting terrorism, preventing armed confrontations and clashes between Lebanese components, and providing humanitarian aid when needed, despite the stifling political, economic and social crises the country is going through. If you think about it, this is where the paradox really lies.

The Lebanese Army has succeeded by virtue of its leadership’s wisdom, which relies first and foremost on the assistance given by various components of the Lebanese people to their national army. The Lebanese leadership also depends on the soldiers’ loyalty, their quality competencies and high morale, even in the darkest and most difficult circumstances, as well as their willingness to sacrifice themselves for their country. The leadership also depends on cooperation with other security agencies. Finally, it relies on cooperation with friendly countries, which provided the Army with most of the supplies, equipment, weapons and ammunition.

Lebanon: A Journey to the End of the State (Crisis Group)

Like many residents who can afford it, in the summer of every year I flee Lebanon’s sweltering heat for Europe. This year, though, I return in early August, when the temperatures are highest, to get my scheduled second shot of the COVID-19 vaccine.

Lebanon’s central bank vows to cooperate with audit as pound dips (Al Jazeera)

Lebanon’s central bank said on Thursday that it would fulfil all data requests from the consultancy Alvarez & Marsal (A&M) for a forensic audit of its accounts amid reports that the firm was set to pull out due to a lack of cooperation.

The audit is seen as a key condition for an International Monetary fund support programme and other foreign aid to stem Lebanon’s deepest economic crisis since its 1975-1990 civil war.

Beirut blast: UN ignored plea for port disaster evidence (BBC)

The BBC has learned that the UN has repeatedly ignored requests from bereaved families for information to help the official investigation into the Beirut port explosion which killed 219 people in August last year.

The probe has been beset by delays, rows and recriminations, leaving families and survivors no closer to finding out who, if anyone, was to blame, as BBC Middle East correspondent Anna Foster reports.

The Politics of Perdition (Mohanad Hage Ali, Carnegie Middle East Center)

“Those who are innocent don’t fear the judiciary,” Lebanese President Michel Aoun tweeted on November 10, in reference to Hezbollah’s campaign to stop the investigation of judge Tareq Bitar, who for months has been trying to uncover responsibilities in the devastating Beirut Port explosion of August 4, 2020. Given Aoun’s fifteen-year alliance with Hezbollah, such public criticism of the organization from the president is unprecedented.
