Libyan security forces violently break up migrant protest (Al Jazeera)

Libyan security forces have raided and violently broke up a protest sit-in by migrants outside a shuttered UN community centre in the capital of Tripoli, activists and migrants said.

The troops came overnight, smashed up the protest site and arrested hundreds, said activist Tarik Lamloum on Monday. Those detained were sent to a detention centre in the nearby town of Ain Zara. Others managed to flee from the raid, he said.

Has the political process in Libya failed? (Al Jazeera)

Libya was among the Arab Spring nations, and since a revolution toppled the government a decade ago, it has not known peace or political stability.

But after months of arduous negotiations and international mediation, there were fresh hopes for the future.

Warring sides signed a United Nations-sponsored ceasefire deal, formed a unity government and agreed to hold elections on December 24.

But the head of the electoral commission has now dissolved all electoral committees, just days before polling stations were due to open.

What does it all mean for the future of this country?

Libya electoral commission dissolves poll committees (Al Jazeera)

Libya’s head of the High National Electoral Commission (HNEC) has ordered the dissolution of the electoral committees nationwide, in a move that effectively postpones this week’s presidential elections.

A leaked internal statement by Imad al-Sayeh dated December 20 outlined six points, chiefly “the disbandment of electoral regional and local branch offices and committees”. A member of the HNEC’s board of directors on Tuesday confirmed the authenticity of the document.

After a decade of chaos and civil war, Libyans have grown disenchanted with politics. Lapidated Libya (Michael Young, Carnegie Middle East Center)

Tarek Mitri is president of the Saint George University in Beirut. He was appointed several times a Lebanese minister, before being tasked by then United Nations secretary general Ban Ki-moon to serve as Special Representative for Libya in 2012–2014. In anticipation of the presidential elections in Libya on December 24, followed by a second round on January 24, 2022, Diwan interviewed Mitri in early December to get a broader perspective on developments in the country, and to ask him what the country needs in order to be stabilized.

Libya delays candidate list as likely election postponement looms (Al Jazeera)

Libya’s election commission said it would not publish a list of presidential candidates until after it settles some legal issues, leaving almost no time to hold the vote as planned on December 24.

“Given the sensitivities of this stage and the political and security circumstances surrounding it, the commission is keen to exhaust all means of litigation to ensure its decisions comply with issued judgements,” the commission said in a statement on Saturday.

‘Point of no return’: Refugees in Libya long for safety (Federica Marsi, Al Jazeera)

David Oliver Yambio has run out of options.

The 24-year-old from South Sudan is among the hundreds of refugees and asylum seekers who have spent more than seven weeks camped outside a United Nations centre in Tripoli to demand relocation to a safe place after being targeted in a major crackdown in western Libya.
