Russian-Led CSTO Stages More Counterterrorism Drills On Tajik-Afghan Border (RFE RL)

Members of the Russian-led Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) have completed another joint counterterrorism training exercise in Tajikistan near the border with Afghanistan.

The exercise on October 23 presented a scenario in which columns of vehicles transport militants across the border from Afghanistan into Tajikistan.

Afghan resistance considers Dushanbe suitable platform for dialogue with Taliban (TASS)

The Afghan resistance forces are ready to hold talks with the Taliban (outlawed in Russia) and believe that Tajikistan would be a suitable platform for such a dialogue, leader of the National Congress Party Abdul Latif Pedram, who supports the Afghan resistance, told TASS on Wednesday.

Tension is rising between Afghanistan and Tajikistan.

Last week, the Taliban warned the Tajik government against meddling in Afghanistan’s internal affairs.

It comes after Tajik President Emomali Rahmon refused to recognise the new Taliban government and accused the armed group of human rights abuses against a Tajik minority in the Panjshir Valley.

Panjshir fell for the first time to the Taliban last month after fierce battles.

Russia has urged Tajikistan and Taliban-ruled Afghanistan to take “mutually acceptable measures” to resolve tensions along the Tajik-Afghan border amid reports of an increased military buildup on both sides.

Tajik President Emomali Rahmon has refused to recognize the Taliban-led government and condemned the militant group for alleged human rights abuses in the Panjshir Valley, which was the last pocket of resistance to the group.
