USA. After 9/11, the U.S. Got Almost Everything Wrong (Garrett M. Graff, Defense One)

GETTY ; ADAM MAIDA / THE ATLANTIC

On the Friday after 9/11, President George W. Bush visited the New York City site that the world would come to know as Ground Zero. After rescue workers shouted that they couldn’t hear him as he spoke to them through a bullhorn, he turned toward them and ad-libbed. “I can hear you,” he shouted. “The whole world hears you, and when we find these people who knocked these buildings down, they’ll hear all of us soon.” Everybody roared. At a prayer service later that day, he outlined the clear objective of the task ahead: “Our responsibility to history is already clear: to answer these attacks and rid the world of evil.”

U.S. State Department officials acknowledged Tuesday that they have  been unable so far to get six chartered aircraft carrying about 1,000 evacuees out of Mazar-i-Sharif, but it was not clear whether the holdup was due to U.S. bureaucracy or Taliban action.

On Tuesday, Secretary of State Anthony Blinken denied that the Taliban were forbidding the aircraft to take off or the passengers to disembark.

A new company, with funding from the U.S. Army, may have found the secret to treating PTSD with a pill or some other direct form of medicine.

Right now, treatments for PTSD range from virtual reality to electronic brain stimulation to hallucinogens and ecstasy. But while these can lessen symptoms, they don’t offer a direct cure.

The Marine Corps has suspended waterborne operations for all their new amphibious combat vehicles, after Marines found a problem with the vehicle’s sea tow quick release mechanism.

The suspension was made “out of an abundance of caution,” and the service is trying to find and fix the cause of the problem with the mechanism, Marine Corps spokesman Maj. Jim Stenger said in a statement Friday.

For the first time in decades, U.S. Marines must assume that enemies will contest their supply lines, from the western Pacific all the way back to the United States, the Marine Corps commandant said recently.

“We can have the best force postured perfectly with this magnificent [Joint All-Domain Command and Control] on top of it. If they’re able to contest and really choke us off logistically, they’ll take us to our knees. We can’t let that happen,” Gen. David Berger said Wednesday during an event with the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington, D.C.-based think tank.

Some 5,000 Afghans rescued, plus Italians and citizens of allied countries: a spectacular achievement by Italy during the evacuation from Hamid Karzai International Airport. To handle the extraordinarily complex and dangerous task, Rome had dispatched some of its very best soldiers and Carabinieri. Other countries can learn from Italy’s green-and-blue Carabinieri—a hybrid police-and-military force—because the world will see plenty more of these highly complex and dangerous situations short of war.

Moscow’s illegal annexation of Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014 isolated Russia internationally, but also secured a foothold that could be used to attack the rest of Ukraine. New analysis shows that a recent exercise on the peninsula may have been practice for a wider invasion.

Data analysis firm Orbital Insight used a new tool, dubbed GO, to analyze satellite imagery, cell phone pings, and other pieces of open-source information from Crimea during the exercise, which ran from mid-March until May.

The debate over boycotting the Beijing Winter Olympics surfaced in the House Armed Services Committee’s consideration of its annual defense bill on Wednesday, revealing how bipartisan China hawks are struggling to find ways to punish the regime.

Some lawmakers argued that sponsors of the Beijing Winter Olympics, such as Coca-Cola or Procter & Gamble, shouldn’t be allowed to sell their products on military installations. But others were reluctant to prevent military families from buying Tide laundry detergent or to punish athletes who have worked for more than a decade to reach the pinnacle of their sport.
