Egypt inaugurates water plants in Sinai amid development plans (Muhammed Magdy, Al-Monitor)

Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi inaugurated Sept. 28 the Bahr el-Baqar wastewater treatment plant in Port Said governorate, in the northwest of the Sinai Peninsula.

With a daily production capacity of 5.6 million cubic meters, the plant was registered in the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s largest agricultural wastewater treatment plant. It took two years to build the plant at a cost of 18 billion Egyptian pounds ($1.14 billion).

Sisi “stressed the importance of the upcoming Libyan elections in respecting and activating the free will of the … Libyan people,” a presidency statement said on Thursday.

USA/Egypt. US to place conditions on fraction of aid to Egypt: US media (Joseph Stepansky, Al Jazeera)

The United States will withhold $130m in security assistance to Egypt this year, releasing the funds only if the government of President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi ends the prosecution of rights and civil society organisations.

Washington also demanded the release of 16 American prisoners in return for the aid, US media reported on Monday.

Egypt. Al-Sisi Is Leaving the Sick to Suffer in Egypt’s Prisons (Amr Magdi, HRW)

On July 25, the family of 69-year-old Abd al-Moniem Abu al-Fotouh, the detained leader of the Strong Egypt Party, said he had suffered symptoms resembling a heart attack the night before while in solitary confinement in Cairo’s notorious Tora Prison. According to the family, Abu al-Fotouh, who is a doctor himself, knocked on his cell door the whole night, asking for help in vain from the prison guards.
