The IMF needs to prepare for the post-COVID world (Martin Mühleisen, Atlantic Council)

While the controversy surrounding International Monetary Fund (IMF) Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva has drawn the bulk of the attention as the IMF and World Bank settle in for their annual meetings this week, IMF members would be better off engaging in a serious discussion of the organization’s strategic direction.

The risks inherent in its economic outlook, such as the withdrawal of pandemic-driven stimulus and stretched asset valuations, will require reconciling differing views on how much the institution has changed its focus toward climate policy and development finance in the last two years.

Some observers are concerned about the IMF moving too far away from its traditional area of expertise. Their worries are justified: progress on climate and development can only be achieved via strong job growth and a healthy global economy. The fund therefore needs to stay focused on its global stability mandate.

The IMF warns of growing threats to global economic recovery (Al Jazeera)

The International Monetary Fund did not mince words in its latest outlook for the global economy released on Tuesday, warning that the threats to the economic recovery from last year’s COVID-19 disruptions are growing, along with a “dangerous divergence” between richer and poorer countries.

The IMF revised its headline forecast for global growth this year down slightly by 0.1 percent to 5.9 percent while leaving its projections for 2022 unchanged at 4.9 percent.

(IMF) Building a Better SDR (Project-Syndicate)

JOSÉ ANTONIO OCAMPO

As the International Monetary Fund prepares for its next large-scale issue of special drawing rights, its reserve asset, the time is ripe for reform. At the top of the list of priorities should be eliminating dual IMF accounting and implementing a more equitable system for determining SDR allocations.

(IMF) Tristan Walker on Innovation at the International Monetary Fund (CIGI)

Christine Lagarde, the first woman to lead the International Monetary Fund, will be remembered for pushing the institution out of its comfort zone. She directed staff to work on “softer” issues such as gender equality and climate change. Her agenda initially seemed frivolous to some critics, but now, a decade after her appointment in 2011, it looks prescient, as climate and inclusion are at the core of the global policy agenda.
