Maldives: India first or India out? (David Brewster, The Interpreter)

Recent protests in Maldives against India’s influence in the country calling for “Indian military out” has led the Maldives government to respond by reiterating its “India First” policy. This has highlighted the difficulties that both countries face in building a stable strategic partnership while also addressing popular sensitivities. It’s not something that India has been good at elsewhere in the neighbourhood.

Maldives/India/China. Maldives: India-funded sea bridge project has an ambitious deadline (N Saathiya Moorthy, ORF)

In what promises to be the crown jewel of development projects in Maldives, the host government has signed a commercial contract with Indian infrastructure major, Afcons, for the prestigious 6.74-kilometre sea bridge connecting capital Malé to three other islands. Funded by India on a 1:4 grant-cum-credit basis, the US $500 million bridge is the single largest infrastructure project in the country, with multiple goals and targets.

Known as the Greater Malé Connectivity Project (GMCP), the fork bridge will link Malé to neighbouring Villingli, Gulhifalhu, and Thilafushi, thereby, developing these three islands as well. It will also help create the much needed lung space in capital Malé, which is at present the most crowded capital city now in the region in terms of population-density.

Maldives – Faction within MDP and Political Developments in Maldives: Back to Unstable Polity? (ICWA)

Samatha Mallempati

On 26th July 2021, a resolution was passed in the internal congress of the Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) calling for a declaration of a state of emergency to combat extremism. The resolution was endorsed by the supporters of the Speaker of the Parliament Mohammed Nasheed who belongs to MDP. What is noted was the absence of support to the resolution by MDP members supporting the President of Maldives, Mohammed Solih, who also belongs to the same party. Thirty nine members voted in favour of the resolution out of forty one members present at the congress. In total, the MDP Congress has 148 members, a large number of MDP members were not present at the voting.[i] The visible differences within the MDP at a time when the country is facing the unprecedented task of tackling the impact of the pandemic and rising extremism may not augur well for the democratic consolidation.

At a time when the nation should be united in the face of terrorism that had targeted Parliament Speaker Mohammed ‘Anni’ Nasheed, the ruling Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) and coalition government are divided as never before. MDP chairman Hassan Latheef has since admitted to such a division, which has already damaged the party’s public image and standing.
