Relief, satisfaction at conviction of Syrian former colonel (Cathrin Schaer, Al Jazeera)

The final day of the world’s first criminal trial focused on war crimes in Syria started long before dawn. A small crowd began to gather at the doors of the courthouse in the southwestern German city of Koblenz at about 3am, eager to secure their seats inside.

When Merlina Herbach and Hassan Kansour arrived at 4:30am (03:30 GMT), it was still dark outside.

Assad’s normalization and the politics of erasure in Syria (Steven Heydemann, Brookings)

This March, Syria’s conflict will enter its 11th year, with no end in sight. As this bleak anniversary approaches, Syria’s economy has collapsed; narcotics trafficking has become a leading source of regime revenue. More than 12 million Syrians are food insecure. Domestic security is precarious. Low-level insurgencies have flared up in areas previously retaken by regime forces. The Islamic State group’s cells are active across swaths of eastern Syria. Despite a nominal cease-fire in the northeast, regime and Russian attacks targeting civilians are a near-daily occurrence.

Syrian activists tell stories of displacement over lost decade (Asaad Hanna, Al Monitor)

March 15, 2011, marks the Syrian “Day of Rage,” triggered by the detention of children in Dara and inspired by the hopes unleashed in the Arab Spring. Hundreds took to the streets, then thousands, then more than a million.
