USA/Syria/Middle East. Middle East prepares for the US to exit Syria (Neil Quilliam, Chatham House)

The Biden administration has already given indications it is willing to look away from Gulf Arab states reviving relations with Syrian president Bashar al-Assad rather than actively prevent them from doing so. This marks a slight but significant shift in US policy, as represented by the 2019 Caesar Syria Civilian Protection Act.

Syria. Syria Rebels Kill 4 Soldiers in Daraa: State Media (The Defense Post)

Four Syrian soldiers were killed when opposition fighters attacked army checkpoints in the southern province of Daraa on Monday, state media reported, as escalating violence threatened a truce deal.

Daraa, regarded as the birthplace of Syria’s 2011 uprising and held for years by opposition forces, was returned to government control in 2018 under a previous Moscow-backed ceasefire that had allowed rebels to stay in some areas of the province.

One of the hardest things we go through as families of the disappeared is the wait. For many years we have been waiting for answers, for any clue about the fates of our loved ones, and for justice and accountability.

During the weekend, I joined fellow activists and Syrian families whose loved ones are still missing after being detained or disappeared by the Syrian regime and armed groups. We placed hundreds of landline telephones on the cobbles of Bebelplatz square in central Berlin as a call to governments to do more to seek information about our loved ones.
