Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov has ordered the National Security Ministry to impose further controls on the Internet in the tightly controlled Central Asian nation, which is already known for having the world’s slowest and most expensive service.
Iranian Minister of Road and Urban Development Rostam Qasemi and Turkmen Vice-President Serdar Berdimuhamedow in a meeting here on Saturday referred to the 84 percent increase of the Iran-Turkmenistan trade volume in the year 2021 and the evermore expansion of bilateral relations.
In a remarkable sign of tightening relations, Iran, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan signed a trilateral natural gas swap deal on the sidelines of the 15th summit of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO), in Ashgabat, on November 27, 2021. Iranian Oil Minister Javad Oji noted that “Under this tripartite agreement, Iran will receive about 1.5 [billion] to 2 billion cubic meters of gas a year from Turkmenistan in the Sarakhs [region] and will deliver it to Azerbaijan from Astara” (Fars News Agency, November 27). Moreover, the Islamic Republic’s new president, Ebrahim Raisi, during a meeting with Iranian businessmen and private-sector activists in Ashgabat, emphasized that “the gas contract with Turkmenistan will be revived” (Mehr News Agency, November 28).
Iran, Azerbaijan, and Turkmenistan have signed a trilateral gas swap deal for up to 2 billion cubic meters per year, Iranian media reported.
The agreement was signed on November 28 in the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat, on the sidelines of a regional economic summit.
On a chilly afternoon in Istanbul’s Kadikoy neighbourhood, Nurmukhammed Annaev poked his head out of the window looking for fellow dissidents from Turkmenistan who had said they would attend a press conference. Dozens of Turkish police officers milled about below, blocking traffic on the street leading to the office.
“The police stopped me on my way here,” Annaev, 40, told Al Jazeera. “They wanted to know if our press conference was going to be outside because they say we are not allowed to do that. I think a lot of people who were supposed to attend probably saw the police and turned around.”
The infrastructures are ready for implementing the new agreement between Iran and Turkmenistan on railroad project via Sarakhs border in northeastern Iranian province of Razavi Khorasan, a provincial official announced on Monday.
Sarakhs border has the capacity to exchange 400 wagons on a daily basis, Mostafa Nasiri-Varag told IRNA.
Russia and Turkmenistan have signed an economic cooperation program for 2021-2023 during a bilateral intergovernmental commission meeting in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat, the country’s TDH news agency has reported.
Turkmenistan unveiled for the first time its Bayraktar TB2 combat drones during a Sept. 27 military parade marking the country’s 30th anniversary of independence from the Soviet Union.
