North Korea appears to have restarted a nuclear reactor that is widely believed to have produced plutonium for nuclear weapons, the U.N. atomic watchdog said in an annual report, highlighting the isolated nation’s efforts to expand its arsenal.

The signs of operation at the 5-megawatt (MW) reactor, which is seen as capable of producing weapons-grade plutonium, were the first to be spotted since late 2018, the International Atomic Energy Agency said in the report, dated Friday.

Afghanistan/USA. US Evacuation Effort ‘Uninterrupted’ by Kabul Airport Rocket Attack  (VoA)

The White House said Monday operations “continue uninterrupted” at the airport in Kabul, Afghanistan, after a rocket attack.

Witnesses reported multiple rockets, with a U.S. official telling Reuters they were intercepted by a missile defense system.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said in a statement that President Joe Biden had been briefed on the attack and “reconfirmed his order that commanders redouble their efforts to prioritize doing whatever is necessary to protect our forces on the ground.”

Afghanistan. US Embassy in Kabul Issues Threat Alert (VoA)

A few hours after U.S. President Joe Biden said another attack on the Kabul airport is likely within the next 24 to 36 hours, the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, citing a specific and credible threat, urged U.S. citizens to leave the vicinity of the airport.

The security alert urged Americans to avoid the airport, and said those in the vicinity of the airport, including the South (Airport Circle) gate, the new Ministry of the Interior, and the gate near the Panjshir Petrol station on the northwest side of the airport, should leave immediately.

U.N. agencies are appealing for nearly $300 million in preparation for the possible exodus of hundreds of thousands of Afghan refugees, seeking safety and protection from conflict and persecution under Taliban rule.

The U.N. refugee agency and partners are planning for what they call a worst-case scenario of more than 515,000 newly displaced refugees fleeing to countries neighboring Afghanistan.

​A first group of 121 evacuees from Afghanistan arrived early Friday in Albania, after the country agreed to temporarily house at-risk Afghan nationals at the request of the United States.

More are expected to go to the Western Balkan country, but the timing is uncertain because of the chaos and evolving situation at the Kabul airport, as the United States and other countries race to get Americans and others out of the country ahead of an Tuesday deadline for complete withdrawal, amid the threat of more terror attacks.

The U.S. military launched a drone strike Saturday targeting a member of an Islamic State group’s Afghanistan affiliate.

The Central Command said the strike was launched from Nangarhar province and its target was someone who was believed to have been behind the planning of deadly attacks against the U.S. in Kabul.

Haiti. USAID Announces Additional $32 Million in Assistance for Haiti Quake Victims (VoA)

During a surprise visit to survey earthquake damage in Haiti on Thursday, United States Agency for International Development (USAID) Administrator Samantha Power announced an additional $32 million in assistance for victims.

“I am pleased here to announce that USAID will provide an additional $32 million as part of a broader American response to support people here affected by the earthquake,” Power told reporters during an afternoon press conference at the Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince.
